Beginner’s Guide to Online Sports betting

When the Internet started to become the widest spreading phenomena in the world, a lot of things started to shift to this new online world. A lot of sports (generally card games, or board games) started to gain huge notoriety on the Internet, mainly because you could do things that would be nearly impossible in real life, such as play with people thousands of miles away.

Sports betting was one of the things that relied mainly on the offline world until the start of the 2000’s, but it quickly adapted to this new environment, grew in intensity and even started winning ground against classic sports betting, due to the larger number of possibilities and offers that it comes with.

If you’re a gambler by nature, here’s how you can get started with online sports betting.

How to begin

Well, if you’re into sports and want to start betting online, you should first choose a website. There are plenty of sports betting websites to choose from, and here at Internet Gambling Sites we offer complete reviews for all major websites, so you can get to go to the very best without having to try all of them. Bookmaker, Bet365, Bodog, 888 Sport, Ladbrokes Sports, they’re all well established online sports betting sites, with hundreds of thousands of users between them. They’re all trustworthy and filled with bonuses and promotions, so you won’t strike out if you try any of these.

Next, you should decide what sports you want to bet on. Most people opt to bet on all sports, but there are some who choose a few and become veritable experts in predicting the outcome of any match in the major leagues and events. If you’re a beginner, you should try a bet or two in every sport, just to get the hang of it.

Bottom rules and tips

Before you get started with the actual betting, there are some few characteristics that you need to be familiar with, in order for you to fully understand the betting process. Here goes:

  • The spread is quite possibly the first thing that you should learn when talking about sports betting. In many matches where two teams (or two different players, in sports such as tennis, for example) come face to face in a match, there is one who is a clear superior over the other. So, in these matches, it often seems pointless to even bet on – bookmakers will most certainly lose out and you will win 9 times out of 10, because your money will always be on the stronger team, just to be sure (unless we’re talking about those incredibly rare cases where the weaker team ends up pummeling the favorite). The spread is a way to make even these bets worthwhile – it starts the game with an advantage of a few points to the weaker team, so that, in order to win your bet, your team must cover the spread – that means it must win by at least that number of points for you to cash out.
  • Keep an eye out for competitions. Whenever there’s an important event in any sport, such as the Football World Cup held in South Africa this year, bookmakers line up to offer bonuses and promotions, just to get you to bet. And, of course, you’ll get the chance to bet in dozens of games, making things all the more interesting.
  • Go for the largest sites. As we’ve said before, the largest online sports betting rooms are often the most reliable, the most customizable and, at the end of the day, the most profitable. You will get ahead more if you choose to go for a large website. Another great advantage is that they don’t come with sports betting alone, as most sites also provide a casino, online poker and other services, and you can access them all with only one account. Some examples of these types of sites are Bodog, Ladbrokes or 888.

The U.S. types of bet

There are nine different types of bet that most U.S. based bookmakers will accept, and they are widely spread throughout the country. These are:

  • Proposition bets. These types of bet are for the more experienced gamblers, as they involve estimating the exact outcome of a certain match. You can place a proposition bet in soccer, and guess how many goals each team will score, or if a certain player will score a goal or not. Or, in other games, such as handball, basketball, hockey and many more, you can bet on the final score.
  • Parlays. These bets are more complex, as they are themselves composed of more bets. A gambler will place more bets, usually this number goes up to 12 bets, and each bet must come through in order for him to win the whole bet. For example, you can bet on 6 different football matches, making proposition bets, and if you miss just one of the six games, the whole bet is lost. If, however, you are spot on with all the six bets, you will win a substantial amount, much more than if you had placed six different small bets.
  • Progressive parlays. These are similar to parlays, as the name suggests. There are still up to 12 bets, but the payout is not as large as normal parlays. The reason? Here, you can lose one or more bets, depending on the specifications of each progressive parlay. So, if we recall our previous example, if you place six bets you can afford to miss one of them and still be paid, but not as higher an amount as before.
  • Teasers. When placing a teaser bet, the bettor is allowed to combine the bets on two or more different games, and adjust the point spread for all of them. By doing is, however, he receives less money in the event of a win.
  • Goal line, puck line or run line bets. These are slightly more complicated than the other types of bets, and they serve as an alternative to straight-up or moneyline prices in soccer, hockey or baseball. The particularity of these types of bet is that the point spread is fixed and it offers a larger payout for the team who is considered the favorite and a lower payout for the underdog.
  • Future wagers. Okay, you might be wondering why these are called future wages, as all bets are placed regarding future matches. These are characterized by a larger period of time from the placing of the bet until the deadline. You can place a future wager on whether or not a certain football player will score the most in the upcoming season, or whether or not a certain team will achieve a number of wins, draws or losses. One of the most famous future bet is one made by a football goalkeeper’s father, who, when his son was only 10 years old and barely starting playing football, made a bet that his son will go on to defend the goal of England in the World Cup by the time he turns 30. And, believe it or not, in 2006 he won the bet.
  • Head to Head. This type of bet applies to games such as Formula One, where you can bet the exact situation between two or more players. You can also bet on a tie, which can happen if the players achieve the same time (this is quite rare), they all get disqualified or drop out.
  • Point spread. As we’ve said above, betting on the point spread will only pay out if the team that you bet on will win by the specified number of points. If they win, but do it with a smaller margin, you will not win the bet.
  • Totalizators. These are also called flexible rate bets. In this type of bets, the odds change in real time, according to the dynamics of the game.
