The Roulette

The Roulette

Internet gambling has taken a life of its own over the past ten years. Ever since the mid 1990s, when the online casinos first appeared, people from all over the world saw big potential in this environment. In online casinos, as opposed to normal, brick and mortar casinos, you can always find an open seat for you, and you can always find opponents for you to play. And, for games which involve just you and the computer, you can play any hour of the day, any day of the week, without restriction. The bonuses and promotions that fill the internet will also give you quite an edge – you’ll never lose any money if you play your cards right and profit from every campaign that the online casinos are bringing out.

And the most played game in both online and real live casinos is, undoubtedly, the roulette. With a huge amount of history behind it, it has become the star of any casino. Think about it for a bit: when you see a picture of a casino, be it online or offline, what’s that picture of? It’s the roulette, of course. It is chosen to represent casinos due to its immense notoriety.

The term ‘Roulette’ comes from French, where it is a diminutive for ‘little wheel’. It is obvious that it refers to the spinning wheel that makes the game. The game of roulette as we know it today has been around (in its most primitive forms) for about three hundred years, but some variations have actually been invented four hundred years ago. But, if you were to see a roulette table from more than two hundred years ago, you would be surprised as to how much it looks like today’s game. It is a purely European combination of several games – four games from England (the Ace of Hearts, the Reiner, the Roly-Poly and the E.O., some ancient games), a few from Italy (Hoca and Bribi), and, of course, a very old game called ‘Roulette’, from France. When the game was exported to the United States, it suffered some modifications, but more on that a bit later.

Nowadays, there are two different types of Roulette that are played in casinos worldwide. They are called ‘American Roulette’ and ‘European Roulette’, due to the different versions that were played on the continents over one hundred years ago, but the differences are not that great. In fact, here they are:

The Roulette is a large, spinning wheel with numbers printed on it and slots (or pockets) corresponding to each number. There are numbers ranging from 1 to 36, and each number is assigned a color: either black or red. The black and red sequences are alternating, so in numbers 1 to 10, odd numbers are red and evens are black, from 11 to 18 odd numbers are black and evens are red, from 19 to 28 odds are red again and evens are black again, and, finally, from 29 to 36, odds are black and evens are red.

The difference between American and European versions is now plain to see: apart from the 36 numbers, there is an additional ’0′ in the European Roulette version, and there is an additional ’0′ and a ’00′ in the American Roulette version. In its earlier versions, the American Roulette featured yet another pocket, with an eagle. But, through time, that pocket disappeared.

Near the roulette we can observe the betting area, a table where players place their bets on a certain number, or color. The numbers are shown in lines of three and columns of twelve. Here are the types of bet that a player can place:

-          Straight-up: when you bet on a single number on the table.

-          Split: when you bet on two adjacent numbers on the table, by placing the chips between the two.

-          Street: when you bet on a line of three numbers, by placing the chips on the edge of the number on the end.

-          Corner: when you place a bet on four numbers in a corner.

-          Six Line: a bet on two lines of three numbers each

-          Trio: when you bet on 0, 1 and 2 or 0, 2 and 3 (this only works on the European Roulette)

-          Basket: when you bet on 0, 1, and 2, or 0, 00 and 2, or 00, 2 and 3. This only works on the American Roulette.

-          Top Line: when you bet on 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3. This only works on the American Roulette, by placing a chip where the three numbers intersect.

These are all bets that you can place inside the area. They are, actually, called ‘Inside bets’. As you have seen, they usually involve betting on a few numbers, with very low odds, but higher rewards. The next types of bets are called ‘Outside bets’. As opposed to the previous type, these apply to a larger area, the odds are higher, but also the payout is smaller:

-          1 through 18: when you bet on the first 18 numbers.

-          19 through 36: a bet placed on the last 18 numbers.

-          Red or Black: when you place a bet on either of the colors that will come up.

-          Even or Odd: when you bet on either evens or odds to come up.

-          Dozen bets: these are three types of bet, when you bet on one of three groups of numbers: 1-12, 13-24, 25-36. These are, literally, groups of dozens of numbers.

-          Column bets: with this bet you can bet on a whole line of numbers.

And that’s about it, you don’t really need to know much more and you are ready to play online casino roulette. There is, however, the question about the online casino’s software: you need to get familiar with it, know all its commands and know how to generally work around it. But, again, with a few practice runs you should have no problem whatsoever. What are you waiting for, get started!
